Olympic torch relay in China

James Fallows blogs from China, "If this many people are being let off from the factories, something is going on."

The photo (via Fallows) by Liam Casey shows the arrival of the torch in the remote city of Shenzhen.

I live-blogged the torch relay in Bangkok and Jakarta. They looked nothing like this photo.

Impressive ... I'm not promoting the torch as it is only a Chinese show for Chinese that is why you see the multitude in that photo and I have noticed that the news are found at the sport's section of the agencies...

Too bad, China has been sent to the back page...

  2. This is unbelievably ex-post-facto, but I felt it necessary to point out that there is nothing 'remote' about the city of Shenzhen.

With an urban populace of 4 million, metro populace approaching 6 million, and nestled between the enormous urban centers of Hong Kong and Guangzhou on the Pearl River, Shenzhen is anything but a 'remote' location, it is one of the economic linchpins of the South China region.
