Unfathomable horror in the Congo

According to a report published in October by the UN secretary-general. . . . in the first six months of 2007 there were 4,500 cases of sexual violence reported in South Kivu alone. As a rule of thumb in such situations, says the UN, for every rape that is reported, as many as ten or 20 cases may go unreported.
So by the UN rule of thumb, more than 100,000 cases of rape probably occurred in one province of the Congo in 2007. The extent of Congo's misery boggles the mind. The whole article at the Economist is well worth reading.

  1. The Economist article doesn't even mention that they are killing and eating pygmies. And, you'd really have to dig deep to find that what started this was the demand for rubber created by bicycle tires over 100 years ago.
