This is not progress

By whatever means, relief must reach over one million victims of the cyclone. This will require an air bridge to Burma; an international effort on the scale of the operation mounted in Ache Indonesia in 2006 following the tsunami.

But for an entire week, world leaders have been playing the junta's game at the UN. Diplomats have exercised "patience" with Burma's inability to process the paper work for a few hundred visas. On Friday, newspaper headlines hailed the approval of the flight plan for a single US cargo-plane (due on Monday).*

This is not progress. This is bullshit.

* "One sign that the Myanmar government was more open to receiving aid, it gave permission to a US military aircraft to make one C-130 cargo plane delivery on Monday, Gordon Johndroe, spokesman for the National Security Council, said." (M&C)
